This is what I found when I gutted the car. This was not even the worst of it.

Passenger footwell (drivers side was worse!)

Inner shock tower. Passenger side was much worse! This is typical of this generation Escort - there are pads that sit on the shock tower for sound deadening. See the lines running down from the window? The window seals go, then it leaks and the sound deadening holds the water. My street car did the same thing, but not as bad.
