From: Timothy Penasack Subject: [R] My meeting with Carl Date: Mon, 5 Oct 1998 19:05:35 -0700 I had the opportunity to meet and talk with Carl at the 97 and 98 Race Up Mount Washington. In 1997, I was looking at the Escort and he walked out from his truck and spent 15 minutes talking to me. I was really impressed, this famous (in the rally world) driver/owner just walked up to me and struck up a conversation. In 1998 right before the awards ceremony, the television was showing video from the race and a portion of it was of Carl. In one particular section you could tell that he missed a gear change and lost some time. I was standing near my partner and commented to him that Carl missed a gear. Right after I said that a voice behind me said "Yeah, I did but it didn't cost me all that much time". I turned around and there was Carl. We proceeded to talk until the awards ceremony started. He offered a lot of advice for getting started in the sport. I was impressed. During the ceremony he was handed a check for having the fastest Ford on the mountain. He promptly handed it back to the announcer and requested it be given to a local charity. A true gentleman. He passed away competing in the sport he loved. Tim
